Family Travels
Bern & Luzern
Bern is the capital of Switzerland.  This town has a
great feel....comfortable, safe and fun.  There is a nice
shopping promenade down their main street, a nice
cathedral with Mark Chagall stained glass windows,
the infamous Bear Pits and the public bathing pool.
The Bern River is chilly but so clean the local
frequently swim it during lunch break. Give it a try.

Although we have never overnighted here....it is a
great place to spend the day. We have three
times...once in 1990 without children and again in 2002.
In 2009 we stopped for a quick lunch.
From the Parliment house (Bundehaus) you can get
a funicular down to the public bathing pools.  We
brought our suits and had a relaxing few hours to
play around.  Dad also tried out the "Berner Swim"
--locals and a few brave tourists actually swim the
chilly (yes, it is Switzerland) and powerful currents of
the Bern River.  Its is clean and beautiful...don't miss
the last pole to get out or be swept downstream
From the Rose Gardens at the top of the hill,
there are great views of the city
.
Near the Bear Pits, there is a new
tourist center in the Old Tram
Deport...with a multimedia show of
Bern's history.
BERN
On our Europe trip in 1990, we stayed two short
days in Luzern (it rained the whole time so we opted
to travel south out of the rain --to Rome!)

Luzern is a beautiful town ....known for their famous
covered bridges dating from the 13th century.
It was a fun place to explore.

The transportation museum was on of the finest--
rivaling the Air and Space Museum in Wash DC.
It is a great rainy day activity.
LUZERN
Bern is a capitol city you
can actually "live" in.
The old town has a great
market and the river is so
clean, people swim in it.

                        -Dad
I remember listening to a bag piper.
The market was so pretty.
No one was speaking English.

During our second trip to Luzern, Brent
celebrated his 18th Birthday here...also a
Swiss National Holiday.
So lots of partying and fireworks.

We spent one night here before Mom and
Amanda flew out of Zurich in the morning.

Restuarant Rathaus
Brauerei

Fun Microbrewery right on
the main drag on the river

We followed Rick Steve's
recommendations...
Don't miss the Swiss style

and the Pretzel sandwiches.
