| Family Travels Beaune |
| We stopped in Beaune for a few hours to give the kids a break in the long drive from Alsace to Paris. Hotel Dieu is an impressive medieval sight. As Beaune staggered with the losses of the Hundred Years War and the Black Death....and 90% of the population was destitute...the Chancellor of Burgundy, Nicholas Rolin, commissioned this lavish hospital in 1143. Wooden beds with velvet drapery, state of the art medicine quiet nuns serving good food ......a great place to be sick. The highlights are the building itselt...we love the roofs...reminded us of the roofs in Alsace and we really like the exhibits on medieval medicine. Don't miss the incredible paintings by van der Weyden called the Last Judgement....truly awe inspiring. Once displayed for the poor and sick to ease their suffering. Now protected as a national treasure. |
