Family Travels
Munich
We have been to Munich 3 times...it is one of our
favorite European cities.

Rick and I visited in 1990 for three days and one
day in 2001 with the kids.

In 2002, we really got to explore this great city.  We
cashed in our Hilton Honor Points for a free three
night stay at the Munich Hilton.

Munich has so much to offer.  Its got the flair and
fun of a big city....but lots of history from medieval
times and the World War II.  The transportation
system is great....a good hub for train and plane
travel.  The Victualien Market is a great gathering
place...along with the beer halls.  The street life is
safe, fun and entertaining....spend at least three or
four nights here.  It is also a good home-base for
the Bavarian countryside...
including Fussen and Neuschwanstein.
Also, include a memorable visit to Dachau...the
concentration camp.

Before our visit in 2002
We explained the Holocaust to
our kids...being careful to explain
the torture and killings
...and the lessons to be learned.
Deutsches Museum
(like America's Smithsonians)

Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady)
is 500 yrs old...and its two onion domes are
the symbol of the city.
There is a quiet place in back around the
ponds and fountains for a picnic
Residenz and Schatzkammer
Residenze is the family home of the Wittelsbaches, who ruled
Bavaria for 700 yrs.  ...it's ok..not great.
The attached Schatzkammer (Treasury) is more
interesting..showing off the 700 yr old crowns and jewels.
45th Year Anniversary of Liberation

There are a few moments in life that are so pivotal that it makes you
take a deep breath and choke with tears...This was one of those
life changing moments.

In May 1990, my husband and I visited Dachau and spent the
morning learning the museum's horrific story and viewing the
heart-wrenching photos...to walk out into the courtyard into the
middle of the Ceremony marking the
45th Year Anniversary of the Liberation of the Concentration Camp.

We didn't plan our itinerary to include this occasion...rather a chance
visit on a random day....to have an experience of a lifetime.
It made such an impression on us....we needed to share the
experience and the story of the Holocaust with our children.

I think it is one of the most important lessons in life that we can share
with our children
Englischer Garden
A great little beer garden and
casual dinner spot...

I Remember the feeling of the
place and how sad it was.  I
remember the sign with the
saying "Work Makes You Free."

It felt empty and lifeless.

when I gave her money...she
smiled at me
