Family Travels
Northern France
Surrounding Areas--
Vimy, Calais, Berck, Brugge
We daytripped from Beaufort to Calais during our visit in 1990.
This was during the construction period of the Euro Tunnel.
What we enjoyed the most was driving through the countryside
and stopping when we felt like it....traisping through someone's
farm field and exploring WWII bunkers at will.
Don't miss out on a day trip to
Brugge....see our Belgian page

Pisciculture de Monchel
Fishing for lunch
It was like exploring a completely
new lifestyle...borrowing eggs
from the neighbors hens to make
mayonnaise...which I thought
could only come from a jar.

It is really hard to describe how truly wonderful this
little town is...basically, a one street village with
no traffic or stoplights.
The musical bells chime...and everyone goes running.
No, its not the ice cream truck...its the BREAD truck
with its daily delivery of fresh bread
                                  ---Mom
During our trip in 2002, we were guests of Christel, Jean
Francois and Coline in their father's home in Beaufort.
(We also had the pleasure to visit them in 1990 before
children) Beaufort is a little village--no stores or shops...just
lots of friendly neighbors to borrow an egg from to make fresh
mayonnaise or share a jar of cassis jelly.  Even the bread is
delivered to you daily.

Life is different here. You relax.  Everything is done the simple
way.  When asked if we wanted fresh fish for dinner, we
replied yes.....then were bundled into a car, driven to the local
pisciculture and "fished" for lunch at the local fish farm.  It puts
a whole new meaning into the word "fresh"

Arras
About 20 minutes away is a little village of Arras,
famous for its town square and chalk caves under
the town center.  We visited here both in 1990
(before family) and in 2001.  Don't forget a sweater
or coat for the caves. The Caves were  used during
WWII during Nazi occupation and French resistance.
We visited VIMY Ridge
Memorial...a memorial to those
who fought and died defending
France in  World War I--it is
inscribed with 11,000 names of
dead or missing Canadians

front line trenches.......

in the German trenches

Imagine the fighting.
I remember when I first
tasted Nutella.,  It was so
good it seemed addicting.
