Family Travels
Rhodes
Rhodes is so rich in history.  It was an important sea faring
base for centuries...hence, the fighting for control.
Rhodes has been under the control of Alexander the Great,
the Persians, Athenians, and the Spartans until the Roman
civil wars.  Then Rhodes fell to the Byzantines, who ceded
it to the Genoese (Italians), who turned it over the Knights
of St. John.

Rhodes became the home base to  the Crusading Knights
of St. John  from 1309 to 1522, which results in the
uniquely medieval flair of this Greek island.

The Knights were ousted by the Turks (Ottoman Sultan
Suleyman the Magnificent--love that name) and later lost to
the Italians before once again joining the Greek nation.

So go explore Rhodes.
Most of the tourist sites are perfectly packed within its city
walls...so explore and get lost..  If you hit a wall, take a
different ally.  If you find a gate, get a good map before you
leave the city walls...We did get out to Elli Beach for an
afternoon break.

But the beauty of Rhodes is its quaint streets, filled with
excellent shopping bargains.  Take time to have a long
lunch and really enjoy the cuisine.  We ordered everything.

The Palace of the Grand Masters

Includes some good galleries on Ancient
Rhodes history and another on the 4th

The Mosaics alone are worth the ticket

appreciation for artistry.
